Great Glen Way Log #2

- hiking scotland

On day two of the walk we call Al, the only taxi service in town, to see whether he can get us back on the trail. Unfortunately, Al is on his way to Glasgow, so no taxi for us. We’ll have to walk the 4 miles to Gairlochy and hope for someone to take pity on us and give us a lift.

But just after leaving Spean Bridge we discover a more scenic route to the Commando Memorial, which is half-way between Spean Bridge and the trail at Gairlochy. Since we’re in no rush we decide to take it, leave the road and walk the little detour along the river Spean.

This turns out a great decision, as this walk is beautiful, with great views over the hills in the distance, and reaching the river, a ruin of the old High Bridge. Large chunks of it are missing and trees are growing out of the remains. We follow the old railway bed leading away from the ruin.

And that’s when we suddenly hear the loud whistle of a steam train behind us.

So spooky! I can’t help but turn around several times, checking that there isn’t a ghost train coming out of the fog, crossing what’s left of the bridge.
